Kong
Saudi Basic Industries Corp (Sabic) said it
intends to form a joint venture in China with
possible investment of up to $5 billion. The
company is keen on building a manufacturing
base in China, a market where it has been selling
products for the past 28 years, Mutlaq H Al
Morished, chief financial officer of the company
told a news conference.
'We are looking at building facilities in China
when the time is right,' he said.
He said Sabic was in talks with a number of
private and government groups for a joint venture
and was eyeing eastern China as a possible location
for the unit.

Jeddah
Saudi Arabia’s Atoun Steel Industry (ASi) has
awarded the contract to supply equipment for
its SR1 billion ($266.6 million) steel plant,
being built at the Yanbu Industrial City II,
to Austria’s Voest-Alpine Company.
The plant, whose civil works begin soon, will
go into commercial production in the second
half of 2008, said an Arab News report.
The SR800 million equipment supply agreement
was signed between the companies at the Jeddah
Hilton yesterday.

Abu Dhabi's Higher Corporation for Special Economic
Zones (Zones Corp) will create 11 more zones
and attract investments totalling Dh12.4 billion
over the next three years, a top official said.
"Investors have already committed Dh3 billion
to the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD 3),
that is part of Zones Corp," said Norman Wing
Johnston, Chief Executive, Zones Corp.

Dubai Cable Company Ltd (Ducab) recently signed
a Dh100 million contract with Saudi Electric
Co (SEC) for the supply of medium and low voltage
cables, its largest single order.
The deal marks Ducab's
strong entry into the Saudi market. Ducab, which
currently tops the list of regional cable manufacturer,
secured the SEC tender after fierce competition
both from Saudi and regional candidates.

The fourth Joint Steering Committee (JSC) for
developing the largest Aluminium Smelter in
the world (approximately 1.4 million tons per
annum) held its meeting between Dubai Aluminium
Company (DUBAL) and Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Development
Company yesterday to review the progress of
the US$6-billion joint venture Emirates Aluminium
Limited (EMAL) and take further steps to advance
the prestigious project to its next crucial
stage.

Investment
in the UAE's industrial sector has jumped 140
per cent in five years, rising from Dh28.45
billion in 2000 to Dh68.22 billion by the end
of 2005. At the same time, the number of new
industrial firms increased by 41 per cent -
from 2,334 to 3,294. During that period the
sector saw a 30.4 per cent increase in the number
of workers.

Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman
of Hamriya Steel Factory and Sheikh Khalid bin
Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Hamriya Free
Zone Authority in Sharjah signed yesterday a
contract with the Russian Metalo Invest Company
for building a Dh 370 million steel factory
at the zone.
Sheikh Sultan said the
steel factory would be the first of its kind
in the country and will have a total production
capacity of one million tones a year at the
first phase.
